Reading
Reading logs are due on or before Thurs. Oct. 1. Our class voted to have lunch in the room as their reward! All students who return completed logs will be able to have lunch in the room and watch a fun movie.
Thank You for filling out the Name Jar information this week. We had some wonderful conversations about the origin of the students' names! Students designed their own name stamp and wrote in their journals about their names.
This week we will read the text, Owen and Mzee. It is a story about 2 animals that formed a bridge of friendship, that also helped them live happier lives. Discussion will focus around author's purpose and we'll talk about using context clues to find the meaning of unknown words in a text.
Grammar lessons will focus on plural nouns this week.
Math this week we will continue to work with story problems and we'll also review addition strategies. Our unit 1 test will be on Wednesday. Our next unit will focus on place value.
Our second 5 minute addition and subtraction timings will take place this week. Please encourage your child to practice thier math facts at home with one of the fact fluency apps or Xtra Math.

Fall is in the air!
Math - We are continuing to work on addition strategies, odd and even numbers, number lines and patterns. We've been adding lots of activities to our Math Work Places to help us practice addition strategies and subitizing.
Next week we will focus on stubtraction strategies and using our number racks to help solve story problems.
Reading - This week we will read do a close read of Weird Friends: Unlikely Allies in the Animal Kingdom. We will read to determine the main purpose of a text and also discuss how specific images in a book help to clarify the text. Next we will read, The Name Jar. This story is about a little girl who recently moved to America from Korea and is getting used to a new school. Students are bringing home a "questionaire" today. Please take a few minutes to answer the questions relating to your son/daughter's name. We will be discussing our names next week and this information will be helpful.
Literacy Night - Our first Literacy Night of the year will be on Wed. October 7. The deadline to sign up is today, Sept. 18. Follow the link below if you are interested. The evening is for both parents and kids!

BOOK FAIR - I hope everyone enjoyed the Book Fair and Ice Cream Social last evening! Thank you to the Hines, Durkin, Spencer, and Flannery families for donating money for new classroom books! I was able to purchase lots of fun books for us to read! The kids were SO excited to see them on Friday morning! Thanks also to those parents who volunteered their time to scoop ice cream and sell books. We so appreciate you! Thank You!

IPads - We have had great fun this week as we have looked at apps to use during our Reading and Math blocks. The students received earbuds which they will be keeping at school. Please support us by not installing apps from home. The ipads are intended for instructional use only.

We're Getting in the Groove!
Reading We're finished with our Fall Reading and Math MAPS Assessments. Next week the studens will take the AimsWeb Reading test (on Wed morning). We'll continue our launching of Daily 5 by working on Word Work as well as continue to build stamina on Read to Self, Read to Someone and Work on Writing.
We'll begin on our first Literacy Unit, Friendship. We'll read books and do activities focusing on "What it means to be a good friend". We'll learn about character traits and compare and contrast various characters in the texts. We'll also practice making text to text connections.
Literacy Night will be held on Wed. Oct. 7 in the evening at Elizabeth Ide. Follow the link below for information and to register.
Register for Literacy NightSpelling - Your child will be given their first word sort on Monday. We have been practicing how to work with the sorts this week. Please encourage your child to work with the words each night. No test will be given this week.
Science - We will learn about the last of the 5 food groups, the Grain Group. The students have learned not only why we need to eat a balanced diet, but what those food can do to maintain a healthy body.

It's Official! We're the Golden Eagles!
Curriculum Night for 2nd grade parents is Wednesday, September 9 at 6:00. The evening is for parents only please. We will talk about this year's curriculum, daily procedures, and iPads. Please be sure to bring your child's apple id on Wednesday evening. Any questions, please call the school office. I'm looking forward to seeing you all again!
Reading Students will be taking the MAPs Reading and Math tests this week. It is a test taken on the computer similar to those they took last year. The kids should be familiar with it. Our class will be taking the tests each day in the morning.
We have been working on our Daily 5 structure and are building stamina during Read To Self and Read to Someone. We've learned how to choose "Good Fit" books. We'll begin Work on Writing and learn what good writers do to develop independence. We'll be reading several selections to learn how to make good text-to-self connections.
Grammar - We'll begin working on nouns this week.
Science We will continue a unit on nutrition! We met "Little D and the Royal Food Family" and learned the importance of eating foods from all 5 food groups. Ask your child what they have learned about the milk and meat groups. This week we will learn about the vegetable and fruit groups.
Math We'll continue to work on our first unit, Sorting and Graphing. We've been introduced to Work Places and will continue to practice using them.
