Thanksgiving Musical



I hope you all enjoyed the Thanksgiving Musical last night!  I loved seeing the kids dressed up, smiling, and singing their hearts out.  Thanks to Mrs. Crows for putting together a beautiful collection of songs that focused on friends, family, and being thankful!  It was awesome!!

Reading We're starting a new unit this week, Neighborhood and Community.  we'll begin by reading and comparing two texts, Officer Buckle and Gloria and Officer Mike and Aero. Our focus will be on identifying the main idea and details in the stories, as well as drawing conclusions.  

Foundational Skills - We'll be working to decode 2 syllable words with long vowels.  

Reading Logs - Our class voted to have lunch in the room for a Reading reward this month.  Please continue to read 20 minutes each night and return completed reading logs by Friday, Dec. 1.

Spelling - Our next spelling test will be on Friday, Dec. 1.  The students were given the word sort this past Monday.  

Math - We will begin a chapter on 2-digit subtraction following the holiday break.  We'll also be taking our 5 minute timed tests for November.

November 13 - 17

Veterans Day

 

We had the privilege of meeting war hero, Mr. V. Belcastro (Joey's dad), today. He shared with us information about his experiences in the army.  Mr. Belcastro shared lots of photos and answered many questions from the students.  He served in the countries of Afghanistan, Iraq, and Korea.  Thank you Mr. Belcastro for your service to our country!   

Mr. Scatena, Joey's papa, is also a veteran.  We were able to hear about his experiences in the Air Force.  

I'm so thankful for our veterans ~ such courageous men and women who love our country and are willing to sacrifice time away from their families to fight for us.  Thank you to Mr. Belcastro and Mr. Scatena and so many others this Veterans Day!

Picture Retakes - Picture retakes will be on Tuesday, Nov. 14.  Please send the envelope of pictures back to school if you'd like to have them retaken.  

Reading - We will finish our Friendship unit this week by reading How To Be a Friend.  We'll discuss "I Messages" and work with the vocabulary words, compromise, conflict, cooperation, and resolution.  Students will participate in an activity by role playing a friendship scenario with a small group. They will then present their skit to the class.  

Math - The students are doing great with adding double digits.  This week we'll work on problem solving, writing equations to represent a problem, and find sums for 3 and 4 digit two-digit addends.  

 The 2nd Grade Musical is on Thursday evening at Lakeview.  Please have your child at LV by 6:45.  Students should dress in fall colors for the performance, which begins at 7:00.

Reading logs - Our class voted to have lunch in the room for their reading reward this month.  Please encourage your child to read and record their books.  Reading logs are due on Friday, December 1.

Reading -We will be doing a Unit 1 Assessment on skills learning during our Friendship Unit.  We'll also be working on collective nouns (flock of sheep, gaggle of geese).  

We'll be reading a story called Chick 'N Pug, as part of a Nearpod presentation on our iPads.  

Reading Logs - We had a pajama day today to reward everyone for completing October reading logs!  

Math - We'll work on adding 2 digit numbers with and without regrouping.  Continue to work on memorizing math facts at home.  

Halloween PartyThank You to our room parents Mrs. Vidal, Mr. Krieger, Mrs. Higgins, and Mrs. Hermans.  We had a wonderful afternoon making a haunted house, playing games, and eating tons of yummy food!  Thanks also to the Dlugo, Todorova, Trinidad, Dimitriou, and Parker families for sending in refreshments and paper supplies.  Sorry if I left anyone out...  We really had a great afternoon!

Halloween Costumes - Costumes should be brought to school in a bag on Tuesday, Oct. 31.  Costumes should be easy for your child to put on over clothes.  No toy weapons are allowed and make up will not be applied.  Students will be putting costumes on in the afternoon.  

Parade - Our Halloween parade will be held outside - weather permitting.  The parade will begin at 1:00 and everyone is invited!  Our classroom party will follow at 1:30.  Only those parents who have signed up to help may attend.  

Reading - Our focus this week will be Poetry.  We will be reading lots of poetry and learning how words and phrases supply rhythm and meaning in a poem.  We'll also finish writing the final copy of our opinion paragraph.

Vocabulary words will include rhyme, rhythm, regular beats, repetition, figurative language, and alliteration.  

Math - We will begin a new chapter this week, 2 Digit Addition.   

Conferences - It was so nice to meet with all of you this week.  I always enjoy connecting with you and sharing your child's progress.  Thanks for your support!

Wed. Nov. 1 - October reading logs due

Reading - We will be doing a reading/writing workshop this week and focus on writing an opinion paragraph.  We'll discuss the difference between facts and opinions.  Students will learn to state their opinion, find reasons to support it, and write a concluding statement.  We'll work on editing and using strong adjectives in our writing.  

Reading logs are due on Wed. Nov. 1.  This month the students voted to have a pajama day!  Please encourage your child to read each night for 20 minutes and complete their reading log. 

Spelling test will be on Thursday, Oct. 26 ~ no school on Friday,   

Math - We will be comparing 3 digit numbers this week as well as working on strategies for problem solving.  We'll take a chapter test midweek.  Next up is 2 digit addition!  We'll be taking our 5 minute addition and subtraction tests for the month of October.  Students are graphing their scores on these 5 minute tests.  Hopefully they are seeing their numbers increase each month!  

Continue to practice math facts at home.  It will make adding large sums much easier if students know their facts by memory.  

Thank you to the Dairen Woodridge Fire Dept for coming to Ide this week.  We learned some important things to do in case of a fire in our home.  Remember to have a plan for your family in case of a fire!

Reading - This week we will be reading Tarra and Bella, a nonfiction story about an elephant and a dog who became best friends.  We'll finish our research writing and also focus on the comprehension strategy of cause and effect. 

Grammar focus will be on adjectives this week. 


Math - We will continue to write numbers to 1,000 in different ways.  We'll also use place value to find 10/100 more and 10/100 less than a 3 digit number.  

Science - We will finish our Nutrition unit this week.  We've learned all about the 5 food groups and how eating from all 5 groups will help keep our bodies healthy.

Student Planners have finally arrived!!  The students will begin using their new assignment notebooks on Monday.  Look for them in backpacks every night.  We will write assignments in them each day.  No need to sign or initial them.  It's a tool for the kids to keep organized and remind them of important events.  

Reading - Our focus this week will be on collecting research and learning about text features.  Students will be researching either hippos or the Aldabra Tortoise (both characters in Owen and Mzee).  We'll discuss author's message and relate it to the essential question, "How can stories help us learn life lessons?"  

We will focus on shared research.  The students will find important information from both a text and digital source and put those facts into an expository paragraph. 

Grammar focus will be on verbs.

Reading Logs are due on Monday, October 2.  Our class voted to have a Stuffed Animal Day for everyone who returns a completed log.  We'll decide on a day next week.  Please do not send a stuffed animal on Monday... 

Math - We will be counting and looking for patterns within 1,000 this week, then take a chapter test midweek.  Our next chapter, Numbers to 1,000, will focus on place value of numbers to 1,000.  

THANK YOU to our PTO for the wonderful Bucket Filler Assembly this week!  We are officially a Bucket Filling School!  You'll be hearing more about this in the coming days.  Ask your child if they have helped fill a bucket today!

THANK YOU to the families who donated money to purchase books from the Book Fair.  I was able to buy 10 new books for our classroom library!  We love our new books!! 

Reading logs are due on or before Mon. Oct. 2.  Our class voted to have a stuffed animal day as their reward.  All students who returned completed logs will be able to bring in a stuffed animal for the day.  Date to be decided later.

Thank you for filling out the Name Jar information this week.  We had some wonderful conversations about the origin of the students' names.  Students designed their own name stamp and wrote in their journals about their names.  

Reading - Next week we will read the text, Owen and Mzee.  It is a story about 2 animals that formed a bridge of friendship, that also helped them live happier lives.  Discussion will focus around author's purpose and we'll talk about using context clues to find the meaning of unknown words in a text.  

Grammar focus will be on plural nouns.  

Math - This week we'll continue to work on place value with tens and ones.  We will find many different ways to write a 2 digit number and we'll find patterns to problem solve.

Name Jar Assignment
All students brought home a Name Jar questionnaire on Thursday.  Please fill it out and return it to school on Monday, Sept. 18.  We will be sharing them in class.  Thank you to those that have already returned it!

Reading - This week we will do a close read of Weird Friends:  Unlikely Allies in the Animal Kingdom.  We will read to determine the main purpose of a text and also discuss how specific images in a book help to clarify the text.  Next we will read, The Name Jar.  The story is about a little girl who recently moved to America from Korea and is getting used to a new school.  

Math - We will begin a new chapter in math this week, Number Concepts.  We'll work with odd and even numbers as well as determining the value of digits in a two digit number.   

Science - We learned about the Fruit Group this week.  We read about Queen Anna Banana and how fruits contain Vitamin C, which helps our skin heal.  We'll learn about the Grain Group next week, represented by Prince Waffle.

Reading We'll continue to launch our Daily 5 routine by working on Word Work and Listen to Reading. 

We'll begin our first Literacy Unit, Friendship.  We'll read books and do activities focusing on "What it means to be a good friend".  We'll discuss character traits and compare and contrast various characters in the texts.  We'll also practice making text to text connections.   

Reading logs - Your child should be reading 20 minutes most nights.  Please encourage them to read and record their titles in their reading log folder.  

iPads - We spent time today discussing proper care, use, and safety of the iPads.  We also reviews the basic functions of the iPad.  Please help in reinforcing responsibility with your child's device.  They know to be sure it's fully charged when arriving at school each day and they are not allowed to download any apps or take pictures at home.  

Math - We will continue to talk about subtraction strategies this week.  We'll use use drawings and bar models to represent problems, make equal groups to solve problems, and we'll look at arrays to write an addition sentence.  We'll finish the week with a chapter review and test.

Reading - We will continue benchmark testing this week.  Our class is focusing on building community and getting to know each other.  We've been going over expectations for Daily 5 and have been building stamina during Read to Self and Read to Someone.  This week we will work on Work on Writing and Word Work. We've talked about Good Fit books and have "shopped" for books to use during Daily 5.  

Reading Logs - Your child brought home a reading log inside a colored folder today.  Second graders are expected to read for 20 minutes most nights.  After your child has completed their reading log, read for 21 days, initial their folder and return it to school.  The class will be voting on a special reward for everyone who returns their completed reading log!  

Math - We've been working on addition strategies to help us add.  We've been learning some new math games this week and we'll use them in our "Work Places" (stations) next week.

Science - We have started a unit on Nutrition and have been introduced to the Royal Food Family.  This week we learned about the Milk Group and why it is important to eat foods from all 5 food groups.  Next week we will learn about King Henry the Egg and the Meat Group foods.

We had a Great Week!



We have enjoyed a wonderful first week!  The kids have gotten along so well and are learning each others' names too.  They are such a great group of 2nd graders!

We took a vote and the kids decided on our class name ~ the Ninja Warriors!!

They're Almost 3rd Graders!!


We had a great time at PV this week meeting with our 3rd grade pen pals!  Mrs. Klacza took the kids on a tour of the building, and they spent time looking around the room, at the lockers, and learning a little about the Chromebooks!

We had a GREAT morning at DGS watching the high schoolers perform The Little Mermaid! Everyone was all smiles and I heard lots of laughing and clapping!  Thank you to Mr. Lazar for arranging the field trip.  It was so much fun!

Field Trip Fun!


We had a great day at the DuPage Children's Museum!  The learning lab was so interesting and I know the kids were proud of the GeoSpace they created!  Thank you to our chaperones, Mr. Woods, Mrs. Dimitriou, and Mrs. Cerny, for helping us!

Important Reminder - Each child brought home a large manila envelope some time from Mrs. Vano.  They were supposed to be returned to school by today.  Mrs. Vano is still waiting for many of the envelopes.  If your child did not return it, or you have no idea what happened to it, please email Mrs. Vano at amy.e.vano@gmail.com  Thank you!

Pen Pal Letters Arrived!!


We were so excited to get our pen pal letters from our new friends at Prairieview!  Mrs. Klacza's class told us about our new school and even sent us pencils!  We can't wait to meet them on May 24!

Reading - We'll be reading fables this week.  We will learn about conflict, personification, and determining the moral of the story.  We will read and compare many fables and look for the central message in each.

Math - We will begin a chapter on Multiplication.  We'll begin by learning how skip counting and addition are related to multiplication.  We'll then write multiplication sentences that match an array and learn that we can multiply numbers in any order.

Social Studies - We have started a new unit on Maps!  We've been learning about the different things that maps show ~ continents, oceans, and how maps can cover both small and large areas.  Next week we'll learn about map symbols and the map key.
