October 27 - 31

A Trip to the Fire Station!  Fireman Jamie gave us a great tour of the DWFD this week!  We even heard the alarm and watched as a fire truck responded to a call.  Thank you to our local fire department for a great afternoon!

Musical Reminder ~ Ms. Wyse would like each student to bring a small flashlight to use for the program next month.  The students are using them now to practice.  It will be returned after the concert.  Thank You!

Math
This week we'll begin Topic 6, Mental Addition.  We'll begin by adding tens, then ones using the strategy mental math.  Next, we'll add 2 digit numbers using a hundreds chart.  This can be a difficult concept for some 2nd graders.  Please check your child's homework while they are working and help them if needed. Fast facts this week are +4.

Reading
We're continuing to work with the text, Owen and Mzee this week.  Our focus will be on text features, which we will record in our booklets.  We'll discuss the author's message in the book and relate it to the essential question, "How can stories help us learn life lessons?"

We'll use a Venn diagram this week to compare the characters Owen and Mzee. Remember to return October reading logs on Friday, October 31.

Grammar lessons will focus on Irregular and Collective Nouns.

Halloween Reminder
We will have an all school costume parade around the building (weather permitting) at 1:45 on Friday.  Everyone is invited.  Our classroom party will follow at 2:00.  Due to limited space, only parents who have volunteered to help with games at the party will be allowed to stay.

Halloween costumes should be brought to school in a bag and should be easy to put on over clothing.  No make up will be applied at school and toy weapons are not allowed.
